Here you will find a children's playroom, a refreshment room with a soda fountain, a large cosmetics room with a 3 sided full length mirror and even a three chair shoeshine stand in the men's room! Perhaps the most unique feature is the two "crying rooms" located on the mezzanine level. Here, the mother and her infant could watch the show in a glassed-in booth that has its own speaker so that the baby will not disturb the audience! Advanced Technologies

The Los Angeles Theatre was also the most technically advanced for its time. The lighting controls were part of a special Westinghouse dimming system that is still used to this day. The sound quality was also exceptional with its extensive public address system that was backed up by banks of amplifiers that powered the speakers and microphones throughout the place! Neon lights in 1931 were only a few years old but Charles Lee was not afraid to experiment with them. No only did he use them on the exterior vertical marquee, but he also used them as aisle lighting in the main auditorium - a design that is still common in most modern multiplexes!

What Now?

As the fortunes of Downtown declined, the interest and attendance of the Los Angeles Theatre waned until it closed its doors to regular screenings in the 1990s. It has become a unique location for filming and video. It has been used in several feature films, including New York, New York, Jim Carrey's Man on the Moon, Chaplin, Charlie's Angels II, and recently Cinderella Man.
